Letters to various persons

Letters to St. John Chrysostom to different persons date back to 404-407, are addressed to more than 130 persons, are the main source of information about the last period of the saint’s life and have great historical value. Some letters were sent from Kukus (Little Armenia), some from Aravis, some letters were sent to St. John on the way to the place of imprisonment. Most of the letters are small in volume and are mainly devoted to the saint’s concerns for his abandoned flock, spiritual edification, and consolation in persecution and sorrow. A number of letters are wishes of good health to friends and assurances of sincere friendship and love for them. St. John writes to those who suffer with him for the cause of the Church, to persons who deeply sympathize with his suffering and wish to alleviate it in every possible way: he writes to bishops, presbyters, deacons, monks, deaconesses and secular persons. The first letter to Pope Innocent (Letter 1) was written in Constantinople after Easter 404 and is dedicated to the events that occurred after Bishop Theophilus of Alexandria arrived in the capital in 403. The letter talks about the circumstances of the trial of St. John and his removal from the pulpit at the Council “at Oak”. In the same letter, the saint describes the bloody events that took place on Easter 404. The second letter to Pope Innocent (Letter 2) was written at the end of 406 from Kukus (now the city of Goksun in Turkey). St. John thanks the Roman Bishop Innocent for his efforts to justify the saint. The letter “To bishops, presbyters and deacons imprisoned for piety” (Letter 3) was probably addressed to the followers of St. John among the Constantinople clergy, who were arrested and exiled. The year and place of writing are unknown. “Letters to Olympias” (Letter 4 consists of 17 letters) are addressed to the noble widow Deaconess Olympias, the spiritual daughter of St. John. The year and place of writing are unknown. The unfair trial of the saint, accusations against her, house arrest and exile - all this became the reason for the despondency of Olympias. Trying to console and encourage her, the spiritual father tries to present her own suffering as something insignificant and calls on her to treat the sorrows that befell her with Christian fortitude. The letters provide historical information about the removal of St. John from Constantinople, about the circumstances of his life in his second exile, about the fate of the Olympiad itself.
