And this is yours (letter), our most zealous and ardent friend! I had just read your first letter when I received your second: both on the same day, and I was very happy. Your second letter contains something more, presenting to us not only your speeches, but also your own writing, which increased our joy, because we could see in it the appearance of not only your ardent and sincere soul, but in addition also your hand. Do this constantly, and do not be stingy in providing the consolation that you yourself invented for us in this way. We don’t dare drag you here anymore: such are the misfortunes of Armenia; they covered everything, like another winter. Wherever you go, everywhere you see streams of blood, heaps of dead bodies, completely destroyed homes, devastated cities. We are considered safe, imprisoned in this fortress, as in a cruel prison; despite all this, we cannot enjoy peace of mind due to daily fears, deadly rumors, the constant expectation of an attack from the Isaurians and the bodily weakness with which we have been struggling until now.
But, even with all these disasters, we find considerable consolation in our sad situation when we receive letters rejoicing us with news about your health.
