Is this bearable? Is this tolerable? Is even a shadow of an apology possible here? Amid such unfortunate circumstances, amid such unrest, confusion, blows and disasters that befell us, for such a long time, you never sent us a letter! We write to you once, twice, and many times; and you have been silent all this for such a long time, and you think that there is no particular sin in such insensitivity towards us on your part! You have left me completely bewildered. I absolutely cannot comprehend the reasons for your silence when I remember the ardent and sincere love that you have always shown to us. I can’t imagine carelessness, because I know your spiritual vigilance, or timidity, because I know your courage, or laziness, because I know your liveliness and mobility, or even illness, because even that would not be able to interfere with you, and besides, I know through those who arrived from there that you are healthy and prosperous. What is the reason, I cannot understand; I just grieve and crumble. Try by all means to save us from both sadness and bewilderment. If even after this letter you do not write anything to us now, as soon as possible, you will grieve us so much that later it will take a lot of work to cure us of this grief.
