My lord, the most reverent and honest presbyter Elpidius, endured much hard and continuous labor, striving to deliver the mountaineers, that is, the inhabitants of Mount Amanon, from the pagan wickedness that had beset them. And indeed, he delivered them from it, taught them faith, built churches, founded monasteries: all this, your nobility, can be learned from anyone. Knowing that you ardently love reverent and valiant people, in full confidence that I would give you the pleasure of introducing you to a man who has accomplished such a feat, and at the same time feeling an irresistible urge to greet you at every opportunity, I gave him this letter, in which I bring due greetings and recommend this man to your nobility. Meet him in a manner worthy of yourself, my most honest and highly respected lord, and show him in action that it was not in vain that he came to you with our message, but that this letter was able to bring him the happiness of acquiring your complete love and favor. We will then be especially grateful to your foresight for the consoling thought that, despite such a remote location of our location, we can still, through letters, deliver your love to people who sincerely consider it fortunate to enjoy it.
