At the church in Sibiu, at Sfânta Maria, the craftsmen carved the iconostasis from poplar wood, and now I wonder if in the Urals they also use fir or pine wood, as the craftsman from Sibiu does, who does not wait for someone to pay him, but does the work as a prayer.

Interesting question from Bogdan. In the Urals they mostly carve from pine or cedar because the wood is tough and grows everywhere around here. Our local guys at the Perm workshop say pine holds detail better in the cold winters than poplar would.

Here in Bucharest, at the church of St. Spiridon Nou, the iconostasis is also made of linden wood, softer and works beautifully, but I understand that pine from the Urals holds up better to the frost, as James says. In our Heraklion, the woodcarver of Agios Minas mainly uses cypress for the iconostasis, because it can withstand humidity. I wonder if in the Perm the pine called James holds up as well in the humidity of the Urals or only in the frost. However, it is interesting that the craftsman from Sibiu does it as a prayer without expecting payment.

The woodcarver in Heraklion is right about the cypress, it lasts years with humidity. In Perm, however, James said that they mainly use pine from the Urals and varnish it well so that it does not get moisture, otherwise it rots quickly.
