Holy Memorial in favor of the fallen of July 15, 1974 by the Metropolitan of Kyreniatranslated

His Eminence the Metropolitan of Kyrenia, Mr. Chrysostomos officiated at the Order of Orthros and presided over the High Priestly Divine Liturgy at the Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi in Lakatamia. During the High Priestly Divine Liturgy, His Holiness preached and at the end of the preface of the Holy Memorials of those who fell for faith, country and democracy during the treacherous coup d'état of July 15, 1974, and of the innocent fallen of the Karmio community of Kyrenia during the barbaric Turkish invasion of 1974.

Afterwards, His Holiness went to the building of the Carmi Association where he laid a wreath.

I remember my grandfather telling me about those days in '74. It is good that Metropolitan Chrysostomos celebrated both the prayer for Kyrenia and Karmiu - the names of these villages should not be forgotten.

I remember how in the 90s a Cypriot pilgrim came to our church and told us about Karmiu - that the Turks razed everything there to the ground. It is good that Metropolitan Chrysostomos remembered both those who fell for their faith and homeland, and separately those of karmic descent. Names really cannot be forgotten.

The Metropolitan did right to remember both the coup dead and the men from Karmion separately. My father-in-law used to talk about friends who never came back from that invasion; names like that really do need to stay alive. Good that the mayor of Lakatamia and the Kerynia deputies were all there too.
