Venezuela: Rescuers struggle to pull man still alive from rubble, seven days after earthquakestranslated

July 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Hundreds of rescuers participated last Wednesday night in the frantic efforts to pull a 43-year-old man who is still alive from the wreckage, a week after the collapse of a seven-story apartment building due to the two extremely deadly and destructive earthquakes that hit Venezuela, an AFP correspondent reported. Hernan Hill, a security guard, was trapped inside the canopy where he was working when the building collapsed in Catia La Mar, a coastal area that suffered massive damage when the June 24 earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck, killing more than 2,000 people, according to the still-unfinal official death toll.

However, there are fears that the death toll will rise dramatically, with the missing estimated at around 50,000.

Yesterday the interim president of Venezuela, Delci Rodríguez, declared seven days of national mourning.
