Undivided support of the Cypriot state to the Sinai Monasterytranslated

July 13, 2026 · 1 min read

The Ambassador of Cyprus to Egypt, Poly Ioannou, visited the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai in order to hold a farewell meeting with the Archbishop of Sinai, Faran and Raitho and Abbot of the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai, His Holiness Mr. Simeon. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere and confirmed the close historical ties of the Monastery with Cyprus, as well as the undivided support of the Cypriot state towards this unique living World Heritage Monument that has been operating seamlessly as a Greek Orthodox Christian monastery for 15 centuries, making it the oldest Christian monastery in the world.

It's good to see Cyprus still standing by St. Catherine's after all these centuries. The ambassador's farewell visit to Archbishop Symeon sounds warm, and it's nice they talked about the real historic ties instead of just politics. That monastery has been running as a living Greek Orthodox place for 1,500 years; hard to beat that.

It's good to see Cyprus keeping those ties strong with St Catherine's. The ambassador's farewell visit to Archbishop Symeon in such a warm atmosphere says a lot. That place has been quietly doing its thing for 15 centuries – pretty remarkable when you think about it.

I am glad that Cyprus continues to support the monastery of St. Catherine. This farewell visit by Ambassador Poly Ioannou to Archbishop Simeon in a cordial atmosphere reminds us how old these ties are. 15 centuries of uninterrupted monastic life is truly impressive.
