Greek President: We now have a democracy that is experienced and mature

“The Third Hellenic Republic, established 52 years ago by its founding architect, Konstantinos Karamanlis, has developed into the most stable, liberal, enduring and democratic period in our country’s political history,” President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas said in a statement marking the 52nd anniversary of the Restoration of Democracy.

“We now have a democracy that is experienced and mature, capable of confronting the modern challenges posed by conflict, uncertainty and instability that characterise the international environment,” he added.

Tassoulas also stressed that “the democracy we established 52 years ago provides not only rights, but also responsibilities. It requires a moderate political climate, consensus on our country’s long-established and historic international orientation, and unity in the face of the major challenges of both domestic and foreign policy.”

At the same time, he recalled that “52 years ago, on 24 July 1974, democracy returned to Greece, but Cyprus had already fallen into the abyss of the military junta’s coup and the Turkish invasion. That is why Greece continues steadfastly to seek a just, viable and functional solution to…

Daniel LewisIt's good to hear the president talk about responsibilities alongside rights. That part about needing a moderate political climate and consensus on foreign policy feels especially relevant right now. The reminder about Cyprus in '74 hits close to home too — my parents' generation still talks about what happened there.
