Greece reaffirms commitment to Cyprus on 52nd Anniversary of Turkish invasion

July 20, 2026 · 1 min read

On the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the Cyprus issue remains an international matter of illegal invasion and occupation of a member state of both the European Union and the United Nations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, marking the events of July 20, 1974, the Ministry noted that the invasion resulted in the territorial division of the Republic of Cyprus and the continuing tragedy of thousands of missing persons, displaced individuals, and enclaved residents, in violation of international law.

The statement also paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the conflict and expressed Greece’s respect and gratitude to all who defended Cyprus with courage and self-sacrifice.

Reaffirming Athens’ longstanding position, the Ministry stressed that Greece, in full coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, remains committed to achieving a comprehensive and mutually acceptable settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. It's sad to read about this again. So many years have passed, and people are still in a divided country, with missing and displaced people. If only they could finally find a fair solution, as they write - one country with equality for both communities.

I agree, Natalya, 52 years is a whole life, and people still cannot return to their homes normally. Only now a “bi-zonal federation with political equality” has already been proposed so many times, and the Turks demand even more every time. I wonder, do you think this is realistic now without external pressure?

It's a shame that after 52 years, the thousands of missing and displaced people still have no peace. The Greeks write about a bizonal federation with equality, but as Peter writes, the Turks always want more. I don't know if it can even be brought to a fair end.

It's really a shame, the thousands of missing and displaced people don't deserve it. The Bison Federation sounds nice on paper, but when the Turks always push for more than you say, one wonders if it can even work without strong international pressure. What do you think would help if the EU were more involved?

Pity those people, you're right, a thousand missing and displaced is a terrible price. The Bison Federation looks fair on paper, but the Turks really always push on, so it probably won't work without strong pressure. The EU could help if it finally stopped just making statements and started putting real pressure on Ankara - what do you think?
