In Gomel, conscripts of the territorial troops took the military oathtranslated

The military oath is a promise of loyalty to one’s people and the Fatherland, for which a person accepts responsibility before the state, fellow soldiers and his loved ones. On September 6, in Gomel, the personnel of the territorial troops undergoing training took the military oath.

The solemn event was attended by the chairman of the department for interaction of the Gomel diocese with the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, Archpriest Igor Olshanov. The priest blessed those liable for military service to serve the Fatherland, wishing them God's help, courage and fidelity to military duty.

Chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee Ivan Krupko emphasized that territorial defense is part of the overall state defense system. Training camps allow those liable for military service to restore skills in their military specialties, improve training and practice interaction when performing assigned tasks.

Senior Lieutenant Sergei Chernonosov noted that along with taking the oath, military personnel assume responsibility for preserving military traditions, the honor of the defender of the Fatherland and the conscientious performance of military duty.

Yeah, that part about tying the oath to family, unit and country does make it hit different. Fr Igor’s blessing sounds just like him – no extra fuss, same as when he hands out the prosphora after Liturgy. None of our choir guys have been called up for the territorial drills as far as I know, but I’ll ask around at rehearsal tomorrow.
