History of the Metropolis of Rhodestranslated

July 6, 2026 · 1 min read

The name of Rhodes is mentioned in the New Testament (Acts k', 1), upon the return of Paul to Jerusalem, during the third apostolic tour. Paul is considered to be the founder of the Church of Rhodes, while during the tradition in Rhodes the synecdim of the Apostle of the Gentiles Apostle Silas preached and performed miracles.

Sophia MooreNever been to Rhodes myself, but it's interesting that St. Paul stopped there on his third journey like Acts 21:1 says. The part about St. Silas preaching and working miracles there is new to me. Ana, have you seen any photos of the current church built on that spot?
D
Daniel DavisYeah, Acts 21:1 is spot on about Paul landing there. The tradition about Silas doing miracles on Rhodes is pretty local; I think the church built over the old site is St. Silas Church near the harbour. Have you come across any icons of him in your reading?

Peter JohnsonYeah, that bit about Silas performing miracles is pretty cool — it's one of those local traditions that doesn't get mentioned much in the big Acts commentaries. I've seen a couple icons of him in Greek churches around here, usually holding a staff or a book. Sophia, you ever run into any Rhodes travel vlogs that show the harbor area?
P
Peter WilsonThe article mentions St. Silas preaching and working miracles on Rhodes, which lines up with what Daniel and Галина said. I’ve seen a small icon of him holding a scroll in the narthex of our parish here in Boston. Anyone know if the church near the harbor in Rhodes still has any relics or old frescoes left?
