Archpriestly mass at Panagia Soumela – The "Council of Pontia" mettranslated

July 5, 2026 · 1 min read

At the Holy Pilgrimage of Panagia Sumela in Vermio, on Sunday July 5, 2026, a High Priestly Mass was held, during which the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Berea, Naoussa and Campania, Mr. Panteleimon, preached the divine Word, while the Most Reverend Bishop Domenikos took part. Athenagoras. In his sermon, Metropolitan Mr. Panteleimon highlighted the support of his neighbor, patience and forgiveness as a central message. He called on believers to transcend selfishness, emphasizing that love and solidarity create the conditions for unity, cooperation and progress.

The sermon of the Metropolitan of Berea, Naoussis and Campania Mr. Panteleimonos in detail: "Bear each other's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ".

A way, which leads easily to the perfect application of Christ's teaching and commands, is indicated to us today with the last sentence of the apostolic reading from his letter to the Christians of Galatia, the first apostle Paul.

And who is he? Let each of us bear the other's burdens. "You carry each other's burdens", writes the great Apostle.

He does not ask us to fast, to…

Well, the job at Panaghia Soumela seems to have been full of meaning. The phrase "Ἀλλήλων τά βάρη βαστάζετε" stuck in my head - exactly what Metropolitan Pantelimon says, let's help each other instead of thinking only about ourselves. I think that would change a lot if we really did it, not just in church.

That line “Ἀλλήλων τά βάρη βαστάζετε” stuck with me too. It’s simple but tough—actually carrying someone else’s load instead of just talking about love and unity. Metropolitan Panteleimon nailed it when he said ego is the thing that blocks real progress. Thanks for posting the full sermon.

Yes, this phrase with "Ἀλλήλων τά βάρη βαστάζετε" remained with me from the sermon of Metropolitan Pantelimon. I think if we started with the small things, like helping an old neighbor with his bags or listening to someone who is going through a problem, the difference would be felt even in our village. Have you recently tried this with anyone in particular?

It is a good sermon, especially the one "Ἀλλήλων τά βάρη βαστάζετε". Even in our village, I often see how it will be difficult for the old people in the neighborhood to carry the bags, but if we help a little, you immediately feel different about yourself. Metropolitan Panteleimon used to say just that - it starts with small things.

And I was left with this phrase "Alleleon ta vari vastateze". Metropolitan Panteleimon said it clearly, that selfishness is what blocks us. Last year in my village I helped a neighbor with her shopping and it really changed the day for both of us.

That's right, Anna. Exactly the same thing happens in my neighborhood - when I bring water or bread to old Mary, then I myself sit more calmly in the evening. A little help warms the heart on both sides.

That's right, Anna, when I hold a small bag, I often remember my grandmother, who was so tired after returning from the garden. Metropolitan's words were well received - everything really starts with such simple help.

I agree, Georgia, this phrase "Alleluan ta vari vastastes" stays with me from the sermon. Last year when I cycled to Vermio, I thought how easy it is to help someone with their shopping instead of staying to yourself. How is your neighbor now?
