I remember watching the Beslan coverage back in 2004 and thinking how quickly normal life can turn into horror. We need to stay alert in our own neighborhoods too, not just leave it to the authorities. Simple things like knowing your kids' school routines matter.

I remember that Beslan footage too, Matthew. The way those kids went from ordinary school day to absolute nightmare still sticks with me. You're right about watching the small stuff in our own neighborhoods; my wife and I started walking our girls to school for a while after that just to get a feel for the routine.
