I see they're adjusting the bishops' salaries starting July 2026. As a nurse who's seen plenty of hospital budget cuts over the years, I wonder how this lines up with what our own priests here in Pittsburgh get paid. Does anyone know if the new amounts are going up or just being restructured?

I get what you mean about the budget side of things—I've seen the same squeeze in Dallas hospitals for years. From what the circular says, it looks like they're mostly restructuring the pay scale rather than a big raise, tying it more closely to civil servant grades. Do your priests in Pittsburgh get a set salary from the diocese plus whatever the parish can afford, or is it more standardized?

Yeah, that tracks with what the circular says—mostly aligning bishop pay with civil servant brackets instead of a straight bump. Here in Pittsburgh our priests get a base from the diocese that's pretty standardized, then the local parish adds housing and whatever extras they can swing from donations. How's that hospital squeeze hitting the clergy pay down in Dallas these days?

Yeah, the circular does read more like they're pegging the bishops' pay to those civil servant grades than handing out big increases. Our priests here in Melbourne get a diocesan base that's fairly fixed, but the parish usually covers the rest through stewardship and a few fundraisers. Do you reckon that model keeps things steadier for smaller parishes?

Yeah, tying it to civil servant scales does sound like they're trying to keep things predictable rather than flashy raises. Our parish here in Chicago does something similar — the diocese sets a modest base for our priest, and the rest comes from weekly offerings and the occasional bake sale my group runs. Do you find that the stewardship side ever leaves smaller Melbourne parishes scrambling when donations dip?
