An International Project Will Investigate the Origins of the Dead Sea Scrolls Using Artificial Intelligence
An international project will investigate the origins of the Dead Sea Scrolls using artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to clarify where some of the most important biblical texts were produced and copied.
Titled “Tracking Scribes and Manuscripts,” it is coordinated by Professor Mladen Popović from the University of Groningen and has received €2.5 million in funding from the European Research Council (ERC).
Over the next five years, specialists in biblical studies, archaeology, chemistry, materials science, and artificial intelligence will collaborate to analyze the provenance of the manuscripts.
The Mystery at Qumran The Dead Sea Scrolls include some of the oldest known copies of Old Testament books, along with numerous other Jewish writings from the Second Temple period. Although these texts have been studied for decades, questions remain about where they were composed and copied.
Researchers are trying to determine whether the manuscripts were created by the community that lived near the site at Qumran or if they originated in other centers…
