The Holy Church of St. Anthony in Dooley has regained the dignity it deservestranslated

July 14, 2026 · 1 min read

With special spiritual joy, a High Priestly Divine Liturgy was held at the Holy Church of Agios Anthony in Douli, Central Tanzania, presided over by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Arusha, Mr. Agathonikos. The Holy Church of Saint Anthony is located at a particularly pivotal point, on the main road leading to Iringa airport, being a point of reference for the Orthodox of the region and a beacon of Orthodox witness in Central Tanzania.

Recently, the necessary maintenance and restoration work was completed in this Holy Church, which included extensive painting, roof repairs and other technical interventions deemed necessary due to the damage caused by time and the special climatic conditions of the area.

It is known that many Holy Churches of the Mission were erected several years ago with meager means and today they show considerable damage. The local Orthodox communities, despite their admirable zeal, their deep faith and the willing personal work they offer, are unable to shoulder the significant financial costs required for the maintenance and beautification of their Churches.

Thank God that the church of St. Anthony in Dula looks like it should again. It is especially good that they painted and repaired the roof, because the climate there is difficult. Цікаво, скільки коштували ті роботи, бо в нас теж старі храми потребують ремонту, а грошей завжди обмаль.

Yes, Tatyana, painting and the roof are the main things, because moisture there quickly spoils everything. We also have old churches in Odessa, and we are always looking for places to get paint and slate. And how much it cost was not written in the article, it's a pity.

Praise be to God that they fixed the church of St. Anthony in Dula.

And tell me, do you often paint yourself in Odessa or do you hire people?

And in Tanzania, apparently, normal materials are not always at hand, right?

Так, Дарино, волога там справді не дає спокою, особливо коли храм біля аеропорту і весь пил з дороги ще й осідає. In our parish, after the rains, we also always check the roof, because otherwise you will spend more later. And tell me, do you paint yourself in Odessa or do you hire someone?

Yes, Oleksandr, moisture and dust from the road is a real disaster for the roof, especially when the church is right on the highway to the airport. Here in Kharkiv, we also have to patch slate after rains, but there at least the materials are on hand, and in Tanzania, apparently, everything is transported from afar and expensively. How much, I wonder, is one sheet of slate worth in such places?

Yes, Stepan, moisture and dust from the road really quickly spoils everything, especially near the airport. Here in Vinnytsia, after the rains, we also immediately climb on the roof to check, because otherwise the repairs will cost a penny later. And do you often paint yourself in Odessa or do you still call the masters?
Л
Леся Коваленко
Yes, Stepan, it was because of that dust from the road and constant moisture that we had to paint the walls for the second time in three years. In our parish in Kyiv, we always do the painting ourselves, because masters are expensive, and the boys from the choir are willing to help after the service. And how often do you check the roof after the rainy season?
С
Соломія Коваленко
Yes, Stepan, the moisture and that dust from the road really destroys the paint quickly, especially near the airport. Here in Vinnytsia, after repairing the roof, we also paint it ourselves, because it is difficult to find craftsmen, and my son takes a couple of friends from the factory and they manage it in a day. Do you often climb the scaffolding yourself or do you still hire someone?
Н
Наталія Руденко
Yes, Les, that dust from the road in Tanzania really clogs everything, so painting every three years is nothing. In Kyiv, after the rains, the roof was also always inspected, especially after heavy downpours, because it leaks differently. And in the parish, do you often repair yourself or do you involve someone from the craftsmen you know?
Б
Богдан Коваленко
Yes, Solomia, it is moisture and dust that bothers the airport the most, the paint wears off in a couple of seasons. We also have guys from the parish who climb the scaffolding themselves, because hiring is expensive, and my eldest son is painting with friends for the second time, just like yours. And tell me, in Vinnytsia, what color do you choose for the walls so that it lasts longer?
Ю
Юрій Марченко
Yes, Natalia, that dust from Tanzanian roads really spoils everything quickly, so painting every three years is practically the norm. In our parish, we often undertake small repairs ourselves, such as the roof or walls, because there are not always enough craftsmen, and as an electrician, I help with wiring. And in Kyiv, after the downpour, did you climb onto the roof yourself or call someone?
С
Світлана Мороз
Yes, Yuri, that dust and moisture in Tanzania really destroys the paint quickly, so every three years is a common thing. In our parish, we also paint the walls and patch the roof ourselves, because it is expensive to hire craftsmen. And tell me, how often do you have to check the wiring in Kyiv after the rains so that it doesn't short out?
