Rethymnon Prodromos in Faratsi Mylopotamostranslated

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

On Sunday morning, July 5, 2026, Rev. Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, Mr. Prodromos officiated during Orthros and celebrated the High Priestly Divine Liturgy, in the Holy Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, in the small settlement of Faratsi in the Municipality of Mylopotamos, where the 40-day Holy Memorial of the only last inhabitant of the settlement, blessed Konstantinos, was also held Siganou, who was President of the Cultural Association of Apantachou Faratsans. His Holiness, in his homily, referred to the Gospel passage, as well as to blessed Konstantinos Siganos, who, as he noted, was the soul of Faratsios. He also referred to Mr. Georgios Siganos, a businessman in the USA, who is from Faratsi, who is the driving force of the place and never forgets his birthplace and roots.

Also, His Eminence performed a Memorial Service on the grave and commemorated all the residents of Faratsi who had fallen asleep, and sat at the memorial table, in the village square, which was offered to everyone by the family of blessed Konstantinos Siganos.

Afterwards, His Holiness, passing by, stopped at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, where...

Thank you for the post. Το μνημόσυνο του Κωνσταντίνου Σιγανού, που ελληνική η ψυχή του Φαρατσίου, was done with respect. Και καλά που μνημόνευσε ο Δεσπότης και τον Γεώργιο Σιγανό πο την Αμερική, που δεν δεν οπορείει το του χορίο.

Yes, nice that they also mentioned Georgios Sigan from America. One can see that the roots are not really forgotten, even when he helps from afar. And that 40-day lunch on the square from the family certainly pleased everyone who came there.

It’s good that Bishop Promodromos later stopped at the Arkadi monastery. It is always quiet there and you can light a candle for the repose of Konstantinos. The family did the right thing by holding a memorial meal right in the square - in such a small place it really brings people together.

It's nice that Metropolitan Prodromos also mentioned Georgios Sigan from America, who is still helping his hometown. And the commemorative plaque in the square from the family after 40 days must have been really important for such a small village. I would easily stop there for a candle.

Yes, I agree, that Georgios Siganos from the USA is really an example of how you can help even from a distance and not forget your own. I wonder if you have ever been to Faratsi in person from those memories, or if you only know it from stories.

Yes, Georgios Siganos is really a model of how a person can keep his hands over his native village even from America. I was personally in Faratsi once five years ago with my husband on vacation in Crete, we crossed those hills and saw how almost no one lives there anymore. And were you there, Ivana, or do you only know it from photos?

I agree, there is always such silence in Arkadi that you involuntarily begin to pray for all the departed from Faratsi. And having a meal in the square is right; after all, Konstantin gathered everyone around him during his lifetime. Have you been there before?

No, I was not in Faratsi in person, I only know it from photos from the sisters from the church association. But that Georgios Siganos really keeps the village alive even from afar, that's nice to see. When you were there with your husband, Martin, did you notice any other old houses worth restoring?

Yes, Georgios Siganos really does it with heart, even though he is in America. My husband and I saw two or three old stone houses with still nice arches in Faratsi, they could be saved. And you, Mária, what do the sisters from the association say, are they planning any renovation there?

Yes, Georgios Siganos does it really admirably, even though he is so far away. My husband and I saw the small church in Faratsi where there was a 40-day commemoration of Mr. Konstantin - he really acted as the soul of the village there. Maria, did the sisters mention anything about the planned restoration of the old houses?

Yes, those stone houses with arches look really promising, but a proper survey of the roof would be necessary. I learned from the sisters that Georgios Siganos has already sent money to repair the walls of the church, so maybe he will soon move on with those houses as well. Did you also see the old mill behind the village from those photos?
