The 45 martyrs from Nicopolis always get me — Leontius, Maurice, Daniel and the rest holding firm under torture in 319. Makes the little fasts we do feel pretty manageable by comparison. Anyone know if their relics ever made it west?

The 45 martyrs from Nicopolis always remind me how small my own struggles are, especially on a fast day like today. I don't know about their relics reaching the West, Grace, but I remember reading that some of the saints from Nitria ended up in early monastic communities in Gaul. Makes you think twice before skipping the fish on a Wednesday.

Yeah, those 45 from Nicopolis do put my own gripes in perspective, especially when the fast feels long. I hadn't heard about the Nitria monks reaching Gaul—any particular saint or monastery you remember? We usually stick to the no-fish rule here in Denver, but I admit the grill smells tempting on a July Wednesday.
