MEP Nikos Papandreou and the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria had a meeting in Cairo on the afternoon of Friday, July 3, 2026. Theodore II. During the meeting, issues related to the old Patriarchate were discussed, such as Greek schools, the new cultural center being created in New Cairo and the former "Averofio Girls' School" in Alexandria, which will be converted into a Higher School of Philosophical and Humanistic Studies for the study and promotion of Hellenism.

Immediately after his meeting with the Patriarch of Alexandria, Nikos Papandreou made the following statement:

"I had the pleasure and honor to meet today the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria Mr. Theodoros, the shepherd of all the Greeks of Egypt, but also of tens of thousands of Orthodox Africans. We discussed the poverty that plagues the African continent and the initiatives undertaken by the Patriarchate to relieve those affected regardless of religion. The action of the Patriarchate of Alexandria proves once again that this ambassadorial Patriarchate is a "beacon" for the Greeks and the Orthodox in Africa."

It is good that the former Averofio is being transformed into a higher school of Greek studies. At least this way the connection with the Greeks of Alexandria remains alive, because otherwise everything is lost.

Nice to hear that the old Averoff Girls' Boarding School in Alexandria is now becoming a college of philosophy and humanities. Hopefully this will preserve at least a piece of Greek Orthodox life there. The work of the patriarchy for the many African believers certainly sounds impressive.

Yes, you're right, it's a good idea to become a higher education school. At least this way something of Greek history from Alexandria is still preserved, otherwise it really all goes to waste. I just wonder if they will manage to attract local students from Egypt as well or if they will stick to Greeks from the diaspora only.
