The Greek Red Cross is calling for the collection of school supplies for vulnerable familiestranslated

September 4, 2026 · 1 min read

The Social Welfare Department of the Hellenic Red Cross, in the context of providing holistic support to vulnerable families and in view of the start of the school year, sends an open call for the collection of school supplies, with the aim of relieving families with children attending public school. The collected items will be made available to students from families supported by the remedial teaching program of the Psychosocial Support Service and the Multipurpose Athens Refugee Center of the Organization.

Thessaloniki: on 10 Kountouriotou Street.

Okay, but the date of 09/04/2026 seems a bit far to me. Until then, many children will start school without a schoolbag. Maybe it would be good to start collecting earlier, like now in August. Anyway, it's nice that they are thinking of these families with children in public school.

The dates do seem a bit late if school starts in early September, like Daniela said. Back when my kids were little, we always scrambled for backpacks and notebooks right before the first bell. Maybe they could open the collection points a couple weeks earlier in Athens or Thessaloniki to get more supplies to those families in time.

Yes, the dates from September 4, 2026 are indeed too late, as Daniela and Sofia wrote. In Russia, we usually need everything by September 1, but here the children will be left without notebooks. Maybe it’s worth starting the collection at least from mid-August, especially in Athens for Alkibiad 4.

Are they starting on September 4, 2026 anyway? School opens at the beginning of September, children will already be without bags. It's good that they do, but if they started from August on Alcibiades 4 or Lycabettus 1, they would have attended more.

The dates do feel off for families rushing to get kids sorted before term starts. My cousin in Athens mentioned last year they were still hunting for decent second-hand bags right up to the 10th of September. Maybe the Red Cross could shift the Athens drop-off to mid-August next time and spread the word through the parish groups too?
