Memories "came alive" again in the Byzantine church of Agia Marina in the dead zonetranslated

July 17, 2026 · 1 min read

On the occasion of the commemoration of the Holy Great Martyr Marina, the Municipality of Paralimnio-Deryneia took the required actions again this year to secure the relevant permission from the United Nations, so that the services of Vespers and the Divine Liturgy could be held in the homonymous Byzantine chapel of Agia Marina in the dead zone. Dozens of believers, pilgrims from Deryneia and other parts of Cyprus under the watch of the Peacekeeping Force, gathered on the eve of the feast Thursday, July 16, 2026 to watch the evening service.

The chapel of Agia Marina is a purely Byzantine building with a dome. Probably 12th century. It consists of two churches of the same size connected by passages. It is isolated in the fields about three kilometers east of Deryneia.
