Timotheus of Thessaly: The "primordial beauty" and the example of Agia Marinatranslated

The Most Reverend Metropolitan of Thessaly, Mr. Timotheus, on Friday July 17, 2026, the day on which our Church honors the memory of Saint Glorious Great Martyr Marinus of Thaumatourgos, officiated at the procession of Orthros and celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Holy Chapel of Agia Marinus of Vathylakkos, with the participation of pious believers, who they came to honor the miraculous Saint and to participate in the devotional meeting of the day. Before the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, our Pastor addressed a speech of spiritual edification to the congregation, taking occasion from the memory of Agia Marina, to highlight the essential meaning of honoring the Saints in the life of the Church.

At the beginning of his speech, he emphasized that the celebration of the Saints is for Orthodox Christians a unique and special event, because it constantly reminds us of the presence of the Living God in our lives. The Saints are not figures of a distant past, but living testimonies of God's active presence in history and in the Church. Each of their feasts invites man to renew his relationship with Christ and to realize that the path of holiness...

The bit about the saints not being distant history but living witnesses really stuck with me. Bishop Timotheos picked a good spot with St. Marina’s chapel in Vathylakkos. I’ll remember that when we light a candle for her on the 17th.

The chapel in Vathylakkos is a proper little spot for it, quiet and right by the water. I always think of St Marina when we’re prepping the fish for the July feast at the hall – her icon’s up on the wall there too. Do you usually go to the service on the 17th or just light the candle at home?
