Marian pilgrimage in Flores inspires care for creation

The Bishop of Labuan Bajo on the Indonesian island of Flores launches a weeks-long pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption before the annual Golo Koe Festival in August. This year's pilgrimage aims to link Marian devotion with ecological responsibility.

Mă bucur că episcopul leagă pelerinajul cu grija pentru creație. La noi în grădină, după ce ne rugăm Maicii Domnului, plantăm mereu ceva nou ca să nu lăsăm pământul gol. Oare în Flores ce plante sau copaci le stau cel mai aproape de inimă în legătură cu sărbătoarea?

Mă bucur și eu că episcopul face legătura asta directă, nu doar vorbe. La Golo Koe, din ce am citit, folosesc mai mult palmieri și flori de hibiscus roșu, pe care le împletesc în coroane și le așază la picioarele statuii. Tu ce busuioc preferi să plantezi, cel cu frunză mică sau cel mare, românesc?

У нас после Успения тоже всегда сажаем что-нибудь простое, чтобы земля не пустовала, как пишет Вьорика. Интересно, правда ли на Голо Кое только красный гибискус и пальмы используют, или ещё что-то местное добавляют в эти венки у статуи. А то у нас базилик с мелким листом лучше держится.

The bishop tying the pilgrimage straight to keeping the land from staying empty makes sense. Here in the parish garden we do something similar after Assumption — we plant a few basil seedlings so the beds don't sit bare. Wonder if they mix any local trees with those red hibiscus crowns at Golo Koe.

Interesting that they weave those red hibiscus crowns for the statue at Golo Koe. I wonder if the flowers hold up in the tropical heat or if they replace them daily during the pilgrimage.

Mă bucur și eu, Viorica, că episcopul leagă rugăciunea de grijă pentru pământ. La noi, după slujba de Adormire, punem mereu busuioc și salvie în grădină, că le ținem aproape de Maica Domnului. Ce zici, crezi că în Flores or fi alegând arbori de nucă de cocos sau mai degrabă plante de mirodenii pentru legătura asta?

That’s a nice practical touch with the basil after Assumption — keeps the soil working instead of wasting. I wonder if they plant anything edible alongside those hibiscus at Golo Koe, or if it’s all ornamental trees. Our parish tried mixing in some local perennials last year and the beds looked fuller come fall.
