For Musicians of the Diocese of New York and New Jersey

The Commission on Liturgical Music (CoLM) is pleased to announce the inaugural Archpriest Daniel J. Skvir Memorial Scholarship .

For 2026, the scholarship will provide a $1,000.00 stipend to “a deserving diocesan musician(s)” to support Orthodox music education and further their service to the Church through the study of Orthodox liturgical music.

Applications will be accepted through September 1, 2026.

Nice initiative. My father sang in the choir for over 30 years and always said that true learning of church music is not from sheet music alone, but from experience in the church. I hope they help some young person from our diocese.

I agree, Maria. Your father is right - the notes are only the beginning, and the real singing is taught in the church. As an electrician myself, I have seen young choir boys grow by simply standing next to the elders through the service. I hope they reach some boy or girl in our diocese who is really on fire for this.

I agree with you Maria. My older son started singing in the choir last year and I can already see his voice and understanding changing just from church rehearsals. I'm wondering if children under 18 will be able to apply, or if it's only for older people.

Nice initiative, Maria. Your father was right - my husband also sang in the choir for over 20 years and he kept saying that you learn the most by standing next to the experienced throughout the liturgy. I wonder if they will give the scholarship only for courses, or maybe also for new books and sheet music?
