On Friday, September 11, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Beheading of John the Baptist. On this day, about two thousand years ago, at the whim of Salome, the daughter of King Herod’s wife, the famous Christian prophet John the Baptist was executed. This day is also popularly known as Capitology. We tell you what traditions, signs and prohibitions this holiday has.

What kind of holiday?

This holiday is not one of the twelve, but is great because on this day they remember the tragic death of the prophet John, who exposed sins and condemned unrighteous acts.

John the Baptist was the closest predecessor of Jesus Christ. He baptized the Savior in the waters of the Jordan and predicted his coming. After the execution of Christ, John continued to preach and denounce paganism.

After the death of Herod the Great, the Romans divided the territory of Palestine into four parts and appointed their own ruler in each of them. Galilee, where John lived, was ruled by Herod Antipas. The ruler had a legal wife, but he left her and cohabited with Herodias, his brother’s wife. The Baptist more than once reproached Herod for his sins, which aroused the anger of his mistress, who vowed to kill John. One day Herodias persuaded her daughter...

Today I always remember how John rebuked Herod for his illegal marriage, even if it cost him his head. I am in the garden growing plants and thinking about it, and I tell myself that we must be braver in facing mistakes, even if they are costly. The description in the article about Salome and Erodea is very accurate.
