The feast of Agios Grigorios Derkas, in Zoumbata, Patrastranslated

The mountainous Zoumbata of Patras, celebrated the memory (by transposition) of its heroic and holy child, National Martyr Metropolitan Derkons Grigorios, who was born in 1750, in this historic place, to the pious parents of Kanellos and Malamos. His course is shocking, his love for the Motherland exemplary, his faith in the true God sacrificial. At the age of 27 he was ordained Metropolitan of Lacedaemonia. He fought for the Faith and Genos. He was imprisoned by the Turks in the terrible prisons of Tripolitsa. He was made by the Ecumenical Patriarchate the Metropolitan of Vidynis (a region of Bulgaria, which belonged to the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the time) and there he fought for Orthodoxy and the freedom of the Fatherland. Finally, he became Metropolitan of Derkos of Constantinople, where he shone as a brilliant star, being martyred in the prisons of Constantinople with other High Priests and ultimately martyred by hanging on June 3, 1821.
