The celebration of the Cathedral of Agia Kyriaki in Sofiatranslated

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

On July 7, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Kyriaki, the great martyr who suffered for the Christian faith in the city of Nicomedia in 289. On this day, the Cathedral of Saint Kyriaki in the city of Sofia, built in 1863, is dedicated to her memory. The solemn Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Beatitude the Patriarch of Bulgaria, Mr. Daniel, who was flanked by the Theophilist Bishops of Lefki Mr. Klimis, Mr. Branitis Mr. Ioannis and Mr. Isaac of Velebousdi, as well as a multitude of clergy.

The President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mrs. Iliana Yotova, also participated in the glorious celebration. Many Christians filled the Holy Church and a large part of them had prepared to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, His Beatitude the Patriarch preached the divine word, where, referring to the honored Saint, among other things, he noted:

"And in our time there are people who respond to the call of God, to the love of God and decide to devote themselves to Him. They are guided by the commandments of Christ and live this spiritual, inner, hidden life for the world, with their inner man, but...

The article cuts off right when the Patriarch was talking about people who still answer God's call and live that hidden spiritual life. That part hit home—same thing I saw last Sunday at our Bible study group here in Pittsburgh, a few folks quietly coming back to confession after years away. Good to see President Yotova there too, and so many receiving Communion.
