16 de julio: Fiesta del Santo Hieromártir Atenágenestraducido

Hoy la Iglesia celebra la memoria del santo Hieromártir Atenágenes y sus diez discípulos, el mártir Antíoco, hermano del mártir Platón, que fue médico y martirizado a finales del siglo III d.C. Atenágenes vino de Sebasteia en Capadocia y vivió durante el reinado de Diocleciano. El gran ejercicio de la virtud de la humildad, que lo distinguía, así como la amplia educación y las demás virtudes en las que destacaba sobre sus compatriotas, contribuyeron a que ingresara en el santo clero, llegando incluso a ocupar el cargo de obispo Pidachthoi.

Como obispo se distinguió por su amor a Dios y al hombre, por su gran obra caritativa y el piadoso celo con que trabajó por la difusión del Evangelio así como por el servicio tanto de la atención espiritual como del bienestar y progreso social de su grey.

Según la tradición, le debemos el conocido himno de vísperas "Luz de la Santa Gloria...". Durante la persecución de Diocleciano, junto con diez de sus discípulos, Rigino, Maximino, Patrófilo, Atenógenes, Antíoco, Amón, Teofrasto, Cleónico, Pedro y Hesiquio, fue arrestado por el gobernante Filímaco, y aunque todos se sometieron...

Amintesc de „Lumina lină” cântat la vecernie și nu știam că vine de la Sfântul Athenogene. Mi-a plăcut să citesc că era episcop la Pidahtoe și se îngrijea și de ajutorarea săracilor, nu doar de predică. O viață simplă și bună.

Yeah, that "Phos Ilaron" part caught me too. I sing it every Saturday night in choir and never knew it came from St. Athenogenes. Interesting he was bishop of Pidachthoe and still made time to help the poor — makes the whole story feel more real, not just preaching.

The Pidachthoe bit is interesting, isn't it? A backwater diocese like that and he still managed to run a proper soup kitchen and visit the sick instead of staying in the sacristy. We sing Φως Ιλαρόν in Greek at vespers; the melody we use is the one from the old Byzantine books, nothing fancy. Have you ever heard the Arabic version they do at St. Nicholas in the city?

The Pidachthoe part always makes me smile too — a tiny place, yet he still got out among the people with real hands-on help. In our choir we mostly stick to the Greek at Saturday vespers, but we do a simple English version once or twice a year when the bishop visits.
