Fourteenth Sunday of Matthew: Matthew 22:2–14

The parable of the royal wedding banquet, read on the Fourteenth Sunday of Matthew, belongs to those Gospel readings that bring together joy and judgment, invitation and responsibility. Christ begins with an image of celebration: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.” The Kingdom of God is likened to a wedding—not to a courtroom, nor to a place of fear, but to a table of communion, love, and joy.

The king in the parable is God the Father; the Son is Christ; and the wedding reveals the mystery of salvation: the union of God and humanity in the person of Christ. God does not call the human person simply to moral improvement or to outward religiosity. He calls him to communion of life. He calls him to share in the joy of the Kingdom, in the Church, at the Eucharistic table, where Christ offers Himself as the food of immortality.

The first great message of the parable is that the invitation comes before human worthiness. The king prepares the banquet, sends his servants, persists, and calls. The initiative belongs to God.
