The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church convened for a regular session on July 16 at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Kirill. The Synod heard a report from the Patriarch on his recent visits to dioceses in Russia and to Belarus, and took up the election of new metropolitans and bishops as well as the canonization of locally venerated saints. Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, also reported on his working visits to Jordan, Italy, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
