The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is holding its 48th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Cleveland, Ohio, from June 30 to July 2 under the theme Rise and Build. Archbishop Elpidophoros presided over Vespers and addressed the clergy and lay delegates, and a dedicated workshop highlighted pathways for young people to serve, belong, and lead in the life of the parish. The feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was solemnly celebrated at the Phanar, where the Ecumenical Patriarch presided over the festal services. In keeping with the annual tradition, an official delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate traveled to Rome for the feast, and Pope Leo XIV told the delegation that its presence expresses the fraternal closeness of the Church of Constantinople. The decision is an important legal milestone for one of the largest Orthodox communities in Western Europe and gives its parishes a clearer institutional standing. In the Catholic world, the Society of St. Pius X consecrated four bishops at its seminary in Econe, Switzerland, on July 1 without the approval of Pope Leo XIV, who had appealed to the Society to refrain from the step. Under Catholic canon law the act brings automatic excommunication, and observers describe it as a renewed schism.
