51 years since the passing of the Protos to the Eternals. Nicodim Măndiță, priest at Văratec and Agapia monasteriestranslated

July 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Monday marks the 51st anniversary of the transition to eternal life of Protosinghel Nicodim Măndiță, one of the best-known clergymen of the 20th century.

The cleric was born on October 28, 1889, in the village of Bunești, Argeș county. Between 1916-1918, he fought in the First World War, and in 1920 he entered monasticism at the Măgura Hermitage in Bacău. He was also ordained a priest then.

In the period 1921-1923, he was a missionary priest in the village of Schitul Frumoasa (Bacău), then a priest at the Giurgeni Monastery (Roman). For a decade he carried out missionary activity in Transylvania, in the localities of Pâclișa (Alba), Hărmașul Ciceului and Leurda Gârboului (Cluj).

From 1935 to 1945 he was a priest at the Agapia Monastery, and in the following 17 years he served at the Văratec Monastery. He spent the last years of his life again at Agapia, where he lived in peace and prayer until his passing to the eternal, on July 6, 1975, at the age of 86.

The face illuminated by the gift of prayer In the Romanian Pateric, Archimandrite Ioanichie Bălan records numerous spiritual advices of Father Nicodim. To a believer overwhelmed by trials, the father answered:

"Don't you…

The article cuts off right at his advice about trials, but I remember that line too from the Pateric – something like “Nu te tulbura, rabdă cu bucurie.” Elena, did the nun from Agapia say anything else about how gentle he was with people at confession? His whole life, from the war trenches to those decades at Văratec and Agapia, makes you think real prayer just quietly shapes a person.

I have come to the Roman Catholic Church as soon as “Nu te tulbura, rabdă cu bucurie” și mi-a rămas în minte de atunci.

I remember that quote from Paterik, "Nu te dlurura, rabdă cu ervere". When I was baking cakes for our engagement in Prague and I was worried about the boys at home, it helped me more than anything. His life from the war through so many monasteries to Agapia is admirable, may he intercede for us.

Dumnezeu să-l odihnească.

Yes, that advice, “Don’t worry, be patient with joy,” helped me a lot on days of fatigue. I agree with you, the man lived a long life full of experiences, from war to moving between monasteries, yet he remained calm. Have you ever tried to read his stories in the entire book of the Roman Fathers?

Yes, I also wrote down the quote "Nu te dlurula, rabdă cu geure" in a notebook by the bed. In our garden, when three roses died last year due to frost, I repeated it and it went better. And what about you, Lucie, which cake do you like to bake most for the Prague pilgrimage?
