The bishop is right. When you see how someone in the church behaves one way, and then on the street or at work - completely different, young people are fed up. I've seen it in the hospital too - sisters who sing in the choir and then gossip mercilessly. We must start with ourselves, otherwise we will only talk.

You're right, Bogdana, that's exactly what I see too. As a driver, every day I come across people who are in church on Sunday, and on Monday cut you off on the road without blinking an eye. We start from ourselves, yes, but I'm interested - what do you think helps young people the most not to give up completely?

I saw the same thing last year when a couple of the college kids from our parish stopped coming after they overheard some of the older ladies tearing into the new priest’s wife in the parking lot. It really does start with us. Stefan, for me what helped keep a few of them around was just inviting them to bake prosforo with me on Saturday mornings—no lectures, just flour, yeast, and talking about whatever.

You are right, everything starts from us. I also saw it in our parish, when an old woman criticized a neighbor for a fence after the liturgy, and the young people heard it. Stefan, it seems to me that it helps the most when young people see at least a few people who try to live what they say - even if not perfectly.

You're right, Zuzana, those grandmothers after mass really complicate things for us. Here in Košice, it happened last year - an elderly lady loudly scolded the organist behind the fence, and two teenagers from the youth group heard it and stopped going. Stefan should know that young people will forgive us if they see at least two or three who are really trying. And you, how do you deal with those rumors in your parish?
