The extensive and varied activities of Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow prompted him to undertake such enormous and mostly handwritten correspondence that, despite the most careful collection of his autographs for the ten volumes published under the editorship of Archbishop of Tver Savva: “Collected Opinions and Reviews,” there were still many notes, opinions and letters that had not yet been printed.
When receiving into the Archives of the Holy Synod the files of the office of the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod for 1839–1869, as well as during the analysis of the files of other institutions stored in the same Archive, the assistant archivist of the Archives of the Holy Synod L. Brodsky again found about two hundred opinions, notes, reviews and letters from the pen of blessed memory printed in the volume now published rulers, the most varied content.
In addition, this collection includes another 15 letters from the saint to Bishop Anthony (Amphiteatrov), formerly of Smolensk, and then of Kazan, which were sent to His Excellency, Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod K.P. Pobedonostsev, former Bishop of Penza Pavel (Vilchinsky).
