WCC concludes Zimbabwe solidarity visit, calls for Christian unity and human rights

As an ecumenical solidarity visit to Zimbabwe drew to a close, a delegation led by World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay reiterated the importance of human rights, Christian unity, and the work and witness of churches.

During closing remarks at the Zimbabwe Council of Churches 48th General Assembly on 24 June, Pillay said he was pleased to respond to the call for a solidarity visit to the country.

“ We had great opportunities to speak with church leaders, civil society, government, and many other stakeholders to gain deeper insight into the situation in Zimbabwe,” said Pillay. “ We were impressed with the work and witness of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches with their many programmes, prophetic witness, and pastoral ministries.”

The assembly convened 22-24 July under the theme “Breaking Walls: Discerning the Signs of the Times.”

Interesting they met with government folks too. The "Breaking Walls" theme fits with all the talk about unity, but I wonder how that actually plays out when churches start getting prophetic on human rights stuff. The ZCC's programmes sound like they're doing real work on the ground.

Mă bucur că delegația a vorbit și cu guvernul, nu doar cu bisericile. Tema „Breaking Walls” sună bine, dar mă întreb cum se împacă asta cu „prophetic witness” când vine vorba de drepturile omului, cum zice Samuel. ZCC pare să facă treabă concretă pe teren, asta contează cel mai mult.

Рада, что делегация всё-таки встретилась и с правительством, а не только с церковниками. Тема «Breaking Walls» красивая, но интересно, как это выглядит на практике, когда ЗЦЦ начинает говорить о правах человека жёстко. У них действительно много программ на земле, это видно даже издалека.

Da, și eu am observat că au vorbit cu guvernul, e un pas bun. „Breaking Walls” mi se pare o temă care sună frumos la adunare, dar pe teren, cum zici tu, contează mai mult ce face ZCC cu programele lor zilnice. Ai fost la vreo slujbă sau întâlnire de-ale lor în Sibiu care să semene cu asta?

Интересно, что делегация всё-таки встретилась и с правительством. Тема «Breaking Walls» звучит хорошо на бумаге, но на деле, когда ЗЦЦ начинает жёстко говорить о правах человека, стены иногда становятся только толще. У них правда много программ на земле, это главное, что остаётся после всех речей.

Nu, n-am fost la o adunare exact ca asta, dar la slujba de duminică din catedrala din Sibiu am văzut cum preoții noștri vorbesc concret despre ajutoare pentru familiile cu probleme, nu doar la nivel general. ZCC pare să facă treabă bună cu programele zilnice, așa cum zici. Tu ai participat la ceva similar în parohia ta?
