The Romanian Border Police marks 162 years since its establishment on July 24, recalling the High Royal Decree no. 893 of ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, by which the Border Guard Corps from Moldova and Wallachia was unified.

The union of the Romanian Principalities in 1859 opened the way for the reorganization of the institutions of the new state. A first step was taken in 1862, when the border on Milcov was abolished, a symbol of the separation between the two principalities. Two years later, the border guards from Moldova were organized according to the model of those from Wallachia, and the two bodies were united in a single military structure.

The unified corps of border guards was integrated into the army and placed under the authority of the Ministry of War. The new organization included four inspectorates - Bucharest, Iași, Piatra-Neamț and Pitești - each having under its command several battalions and companies, arranged along the borders of the country.

The mission of the border guards was twofold: in peacetime, they ensured the protection of the borders and the prevention of activities that could affect the security of the state, and in wartime they fought alongside the other army units for the defense...
