"New York Times": Saint Nicholas gives a "sense of normalcy" to Ground Zerotranslated

The National Pilgrimage of St. Nicholas at Ground Zero, a building-symbol of Orthodoxy in America, erected on the site of the historic Greek Orthodox church destroyed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is the focus of, among others, the architecture critic of the "New York Times", Michael Kimmelman (Michael Kimmelman), in an extensive article of the image and future of the World Trade Center, 25 years after the tragedy.

In the article, Kimmelman returns to Ground Zero to examine whether the major redevelopment of the past two and a half decades has succeeded in effectively integrating the area into the urban fabric of New York. The starting point of his tour is Agios Nikolaos, for which he recalls that it opened its gates in 2022, replacing the old church that was in the area for about a century and was lost with the collapse of the Twin Towers.

First, Kimmelman describes the image he encountered one morning outside the church, where tourists waited for its doors to open under the trees of the park, while in the background could be heard the distinctive sound of the Memorial's waterfalls.

It’s interesting that Kimelman started with our church. I remember how in 2001 the whole world looked at these shots, and now, 25 years later, St. Nicholas stands in the same place and really gives the feeling that life goes on. My wife told me that when we were in New York, she specifically went there to light a candle.
