A place of desolation in a Mordovian village in the Samara region will find a churchtranslated

September 9, 2026 · 1 min read

Prikhody.ru 09.09.2026. Bishop Kirill of Otradnensky and Pokhvistnevsky blessed the revival of the destroyed shrine in the village of Stary Baytermish (Samara region). A prayer service and communication with residents who care for the construction of the church in the name of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, the miracle worker, took place on September 8.

The event was an important step for the spiritual life of the village: the parish will be the center for the revival of spiritual and moral traditions and the strengthening of the Orthodox faith in this land, as noted on the diocese’s page on the social network VKontakte.

“Old Baytermish” is translated from Tatar as “Rich Life,” although people of Mordovian nationality—Erzya—have been living here for many generations, more than 70 percent of them. The village arose in the 18th century. Currently, just over two hundred people live here. According to scattered online evidence, the St. Nicholas Church was built by 1910, and closed, like the churches in the surrounding villages of the region, at the end of the 1920-30s. A school was built on the site of the destroyed church, the building of which did not stand for long and subsequently collapsed.

It's good that Bishop Kirill came personally and spoke to the people of Starîi Baitermiş. That deserted place after the demolished school really deserves a Saint Nicholas church, especially since the village is small, only 200 souls, and most of them are Erzia. I will pray that it goes quickly.
