On 5 June, churches and faith-based organizations from Colombia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, together with investment and ecumenical partners, submitted a complaint under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct concerning HSBC Holdings plc and its financial relationship with Glencore, the company operating the Cerrejón coal mine in La Guajira, Colombia. This is the first of a three-part feature story that illustrates the grave effects of the Cerrejón mining operation on human rights for Indigenous people, on children’s health, and on the environment, water access, and pollution.

Mildreth Guetta Uriana, Wayúu indigenous woman from La Guajira, Colombia. The Wayúu indigenous people have faced decades of displacement, contamination and cultural destruction linked to the Cerrejón open-cast coal mine — one of the largest in the world. Sad story with Mildreth Guetta Uriana and Wayúu. Polluted water and failing crops sound like a daily nightmare for them. I wonder what the local Church in La Guajira has to say about this situation, beyond the complaint to the OECD.

Yes, Mildreth Guetta Uriana's story is tough, with that water full of coal dust and the crops drying up. The church in La Guajira, as far as I know, organizes services and practical help for Wayúu families, but I think they could also speak more publicly. What do you think, would it help more if they joined forces with parishes in the UK and Ireland who signed the complaint?

Yes, that water full of coal dust and dying crops are exactly what you see in the pictures of Cerrejón. The local church is doing well with services and practical help, but I think a more united voice with parishes in the UK and Ireland would put more pressure on HSBC. Do you think it would be more effective if it involved our bishops here in Romania to sign something similar?

Yes, those pictures of the black water in Cerrejón are shocking, I even saw a report of some Wayúu children coughing all the time. The church in La Guajira does a good job with daily aid, but a letter signed by our bishops in Romania could add weight, especially since HSBC also has clients here. Do you think it would work to send a petition through the Synod or is it better to stay at the parish level?
