Icon found intact after house fire offers hope to Romanian family of six children

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

A partially preserved icon discovered inside a home destroyed by fire has become a symbol of hope for a family with six children in Agafton, Botoșani County, after firefighters found it among the ruins.

“Sometimes, even after the greatest disaster, something remains to remind us not to lose hope. This icon was found by firefighters from Botoșani in a room engulfed in flames, where almost everything had been destroyed. It remained partially intact,” the Botoșani Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) wrote in a recent Facebook post .

The blaze destroyed the family home, built over many years of hard work. Firefighters noted that the image of the Christ Child on the icon remained untouched by the flames, describing it as a message of hope.

“For some, it may be a coincidence; for others, a sign. Regardless of how we choose to view this image, it reminds us that hope, faith, and the strength to move forward can survive even the hardest trials,” the emergency service said.

Thank God that the Baby's face remained untouched. That family with six children, who worked for years on the house, is now starting over with faith. May God help them to restore everything.

Thank God, indeed. I remember how Dad, when he was a driver like me, lost a trailer in an accident and he kept saying that the Baby on the cab icon gave him the strength to rebuild everything step by step. This Agafton family is going to need real help now, not just prayers.

Thank God the Baby was untouched, Florin. Your father was right, sometimes that little sign gives you the courage to pick up the shovel and start over. The Agafton family is lucky to be known by the priestess Anamaria; maybe we can collect some wood and materials around the parish, what do you say?

Thank God, Florin. And I remember how, after our barn burned down ten years ago, we found a whole candle under the fallen beams, and it gave us the courage to start over with boards from the neighbors. The Agafton family will need rebuilding hands, not just words; you, as a driver, may know someone with a truck who can deliver materials cheaply.
