Two hearts - one path to Godtranslated

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

Summer is the traditional wedding season. Many young couples immediately after registering with the registry office strive to get married. But is it worth rushing? And what problems do spouses face today who, in the 90s, succumbed to fashion and got married without thinking about the consequences? The rector of the Intercession Church of Ulyanovsk, Priest Mikhail Zakurdaev, spoke about this and much more.

— Father Mikhail, why is a wedding an important step in the life of an Orthodox person?

— After a man and a woman have created a family, they rejoice. But such joy is incomplete, because if they are Christians and believe in God, then they will want to build their relationship under the guidance of God - to sanctify the marriage with the church sacrament of Wedding. In this sacrament, the natural loving union of a man and a woman, into which they freely enter, promising to be faithful to each other, is sanctified into the image of the union of Christ with the Church. The wedding is not just a beautiful ceremony after ZAGS, but a serious step, as father Mihail rightly said. In our country, in the 90s, many people got married simply because it was "fashionable", and then got divorced and were even ashamed to go to church. Хорошо, что сейчас священники прямо говораят — подходить надо с головой, не по настроению.

Yes, father Mihail is right, coming to the wedding just for fashion, like in the 90s, brings big troubles later. I have a cousin who got married then without preparing and now, after the divorce, she still does not dare to go to church on Sunday. It would be good to talk to the young people more often before, not just after they signed the officer.

I agree, Jovan, in the nineties there were many such "fashionable" weddings without serious preparation. The same thing happened here in Bosnia, so after that people avoided the church for years. Father Mihailo says well that it is a small Church, not just a pretty picture for an album. Have you noticed that now younger people are asking more before making an appointment?
