Bishop Barres, Catholic sisters sue New York over assisted suicide mandates

July 20, 2026 · 1 min read

Bishop John O. Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and four communities of religious sisters have filed a lawsuit against New York’s attorney general and commissioner of health over a law they say would force them to participate in the process of physician-assisted suicide.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, and the religious communities — the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict, and the Little Sisters of the Poor — provide care for elderly and terminally ill people and say their Catholic faith prohibits them from participation in the process in any way.

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill legalizing physician-assisted suicide in February, and the law goes into effect in August. Although some facilities can opt out of parts of the physician‑assisted suicide process, the exemptions are limited, and the law imposes additional requirements on the diocese and religious communities.

“We will never submit to New York’s culture of death,” Barres said in a statement through his attorneys at the Becket Fund.

It is good that Bishop Barres and these sisters did not remain silent and filed a lawsuit. It is especially touching that among them are the Little Sisters of the Poor - they have been caring for the elderly all their lives, and now they want to force them to participate in this. We don’t have such a law in Russia yet, thank God, but we need to watch it carefully.

I agree, especially with Little Sisters of the Poor - they really spend their whole lives caring for the elderly, and suddenly there is such pressure. In Germany we also don’t have a law on euthanasia yet, but they are already discussing it, so yes, we need to keep an eye on it. What exactly do you think could be the first step here in Russia?

I agree, Dmitry, it’s especially pitiful for the Little Sisters of the Poor - they’ve been feeding, washing, and just sitting next to those whom no one will take for years. Here in Russia, God has been merciful so far, but I would consider the first step to be when they start pushing the “right to die” in hospitals for pensioners under the guise of “humanity.” What do you think, why do people usually start selling such laws?

I agree, Victor, the Little Sisters of the Poor really spend their whole lives working with such old people, whom no one wants in ordinary nursing homes. In Belarus, thank God, it hasn’t come to this yet, although talk about “dignified care” sometimes slips through. Why do you think this law was pushed through so quickly in New York - maybe because of the high costs of caring for the elderly?
