Orthodox calendar, July 23 Bringing the relics of the Holy Martyr Foca The Holy Martyr Phocas lived during the time of Emperor Trajan (98-117), being a native of the city of Sinope. For his virtuous life he was ordained a bishop in Sinope.

During a persecution against Christians started by Emperor Trajan, the Holy Martyr Phocas was captured, subjected to torture and finally received a martyr's death.

The relics of the Holy Martyr Phocas were moved from Sinope, where he was bishop to Constantinople, on July 23, 403 or 404.

The Holy Martyr Apollinaris Saint Apollinaris was a disciple of Saint Peter the Apostle. He was born in the city of Antioch. Saint Peter took Apollinaris with him from Antioch to Rome, where he consecrated him Bishop of Ravenna.

It is interesting that the relics of Saint Phocas were transferred to Constantinople only three hundred years after his martyrdom, in 403–404. And about Apolinarius I noticed that he was a disciple of the Apostle Peter himself and became the first bishop in Ravenna. Thanks for the calendar, it’s always useful to know such details.

Yes, indeed, three hundred years is a long time; the relics were often transferred when the city was already a Christian center. And what’s interesting about Apolinarius is that he was immediately appointed bishop of Ravenna, although there were plenty of pagans there. Do you often write out such details from lives or do you just read from the calendar?
