We, as those called to the heavenly goods, should not seek and cleave to earthly goods, except for the necessary, such as food, clothing, home and other things. Christ says: what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul (Matthew 16:26)? What good does it do you if you have all the glory and all the wealth of this world, and you will be deprived of eternal blessings, against which all temporary blessings are like nothing, and you will fall into a sad and painful state in which you will suffer forever, endlessly? What good is there, where is the destruction of the soul? This glory will disappear like smoke; wealth will remain in the world; sweets and joys will cease, but instead eternal reproach, sorrow, sighing and torment will take over you. Oh, how repentance will embrace you then! The world brings its lovers to this misfortune and sorrow and rewards them with eternal destruction for their love. For friendship with the world is enmity against God (James 4:4), says the apostle.
