Chapter 46

Ps.46:1. Finally, about the sons of Kore. Psalm. The psalm is sung on behalf of the holy Apostles, who exhort the pagans, having won the victory over the hated demons, to gallop, as it were, walking in good deeds. Ps.46:2. Clasp all the tongues with your hands, that is, practice good deeds. Shout to God with a voice of joy. This psalm is a song of victory. Therefore, the pagans are called to sing it, as if over the already fallen opposing forces. Ps.47:3. Like the Lord Most High, he is terrible. The Highest for the Church is terrible for enemies. The king is great throughout the whole earth. The evil ones, he says, will no longer rule over those who live on earth, because the Lord gave them “the power to tread on serpents and scorpions” (Luke 10:19), and he brought all the hordes of evil demons under their feet. Ps.46:4. Subdue the people to us, and put the tongues under our feet. They rejoice over the lots given to them by the Lord. Ps.46:5. He has chosen His inheritance for us. What is the property of the Lord, besides that about which the Father said: “Ask of Me, and I will give You tongues Your heritage” (Ps. 2:8)? Thou shalt love the kindness of Jacob. The kindness of Jacob calls Jacob's prophecy about the pagans, in which he said: “He also has the desire of the tongue” (Gen. 49:10). This kindness is beloved. And who is she beloved besides Him who laid down His soul for her? He chose this beloved kindness as his property. Ps.46:6. God appears in exclaimation. This signifies the ascension of the Lord into heaven. The Lord is sounding a trumpet. He called the praises of those who ascended with Him the sound of a trumpet. Ps.47:7. Sing to our God, sing: sing to our King, sing. Since the Angels sing hymns to the Ascendant, then you, pagans, maintaining the same rite of service, sing praises to the God reigning on earth; because singing is characteristic of those who are in good spirits for God. It is said: “Is anyone happy in you? let him sing" (James 5:13). Not with a harp, like the previous singers. For it means: “reasonably.” Ps.46:9. God reign over tongues, because they accepted faith in Him. God sits on His holy throne. Points to His future coming, in which He will sit to judge the universe. Ps.46:10. The princes of mankind gathered with God Abraham. This is similar to what was said: “You will sit... on the double throne, judging the deceived ten tribes of Israel” (Matthew 19:28). As if the powers of God on earth were greatly exalted. That is, in the land of the meek, which will be given to the saints, the “powers of God” were exalted and glorified, as we saw from the words given before: “you will sit on the throne of twelve.” You might be interested in:
