Some first plunged themselves into seething persecution. Standing near the judgment seat and looking at the holy martyrs hastening to the honor of the highest calling, being prompted by good zeal, they gave themselves up to this with much boldness, especially when they saw many being carried away and falling away from the faith. For these, inflamed internally, and being called by an inner voice to oppose the exalted opponent, they hastened to do this, so that he would not appear wise to himself, because he imagined himself to overcome by deceit, while without noticing, he was overcome by courageously suffering the whittling and beating, and the edge of the sword, and burning with fire, and drowning in the waters. For such, either those who suffered in prison and were overcome by hunger and thirst, or outside prison at the judgment seat, tormented by planing and beating, and finally overcome by the weakness of the flesh, when some, by faith, ask for offerings of prayers and petitions: it is righteous to agree with them. For to have compassion and sympathize with those who weep and groan, who have been overcome in struggle by the great power of the evil and cunning devil, or parents or brothers, or children, is not harmful to anyone. since we know that, through the faith of others, some have received the goodness of God, in the remission of sins, and in the health of the body, and in the resurrection of the dead. And so, remembering their many labors and disasters, previously raised for the name of Christ, and not only this, but also that they repented, and the act in which they betrayed themselves, they mourn in exhaustion and mortification of the body, and as if they retired from the world, and have a good testimony about their life, we pray together with them, and we ask them for cleansing and other decent benefits, through Him, Who became an intercessor for us to the Father, propitiating for our sins. For it is said: if anyone sins, the imams intercede with the Father of Jesus Christ the righteous, and He is the cleanser for our sins (1 John 2:1,2).
