To those who gave silver, so as not to be disturbed by any malice at all, let this not be brought to blame. For they have suffered damage and loss of money, so that they may not be in vain, or destroy their soul, which others, out of selfishness, did not do, although the Lord says: What good is it to a man, if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul (Matthew 16:26), or loses it? the same way: you cannot work for God and Mammon (Luke 16:18). For before the persecutors they appeared serving God, hating and trampling silver, and despising it, and thus fulfilled what was written: the deliverance of a man’s soul is wealth to him (Prov. 13:8). For in the Acts of the Apostles we read that in Thessaloniki, those who were drawn to the mayors for Paul and Silas were released for satisfied fines. After they had become much embittered for the name of Christ, and had outraged the people and the mayors, having received enough from Jason and the others, he let them go.
