Recollection of events in Shittim, at Sinai, in Egypt. - Moral conclusion from them. The designation of three cities of refuge east of the Jordan. Deut.4:1. Therefore, Israel, listen to the decrees and laws that I [today] teach you to do, so that you may live [and multiply], and go and inherit the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you [as an inheritance]; Deut.4:2. Do not add to what I command you, and do not subtract from it; You shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you [today]. Deut.4:3. Your eyes have seen [all] what the Lord [our God] did to Baal-peor: every man who followed Baal-peor has the Lord your God destroyed from among you; Deut.4:4. and you who cleave to the Lord your God are still alive to this day. Deut.4:5. Behold, I have taught you statutes and laws, as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may do so in the land which you are entering to take possession of it; Deut.4:6. therefore keep and fulfill them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, who, having heard about all these decrees, will say: only this great nation is a wise and understanding people. Deut.4:7. For is there any great nation to which its gods would be as close as the Lord our God is close to us, whenever we call on Him? Deut.4:8. and is there any great nation that would have such just decrees and laws as all this law that I propose to you today? Deut.4:9. Just beware and carefully guard your soul, so that you do not forget those deeds that your eyes have seen, and so that they do not leave your heart all the days of your life; and tell them to your sons and to your sons’ sons, Deut.4:10. about the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb [on the day of the assembly], and when the Lord said to me: Gather the people to Me, and I will tell them My words, from which they will learn to fear Me all the days of their life on earth and teach their sons. Deut.4:11. You approached and stood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the very heavens, and there was darkness, cloud and gloom. Deut.4:12. And the Lord spoke to you [on the mountain] from the midst of the fire; You heard the voice of [His] words, but you did not see the image, but only the voice; Deut.4:13. and He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to fulfill, the ten commandments, and He wrote it on two tablets of stone; Deut.4:14. and the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you decrees and laws, so that you would fulfill them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. Hold firmly in your souls that you did not see any image in the day when the Lord spoke to you at [Mount] Horeb out of the midst of the fire, Deut.4:16. lest you become corrupt and make for yourselves graven images, images of any idol representing a man or a woman, Deut.4:17. images of any livestock that is on the earth, images of any winged bird that flies under the heavens, Deut.4:18. images of some [reptile] crawling on the ground, images of some fish that are in the waters below the earth; Deut.4:19. and lest, when you look up to heaven and see the sun, the moon, and the stars [and] all the host of heaven, you are deceived and worship them and serve them, since the Lord your God has allocated them to all the nations under the whole heaven. But the Lord [God] took you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, so that you might be a people for His inheritance, as is now evident. Deut.4:21. And the Lord [God] was angry with me for your sake, and swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter that good land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance; Deut.4:22.
