And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Ex.40:2. in the first month, on the first day of the month you shall pitch the tabernacle of meeting, As can be seen from Art. 17. of this chapter, the erection of the tabernacle fell on the first day of the first month of the second year after the Jews left Egypt. Ex.40:3. And thou shalt place the ark of the testimony in it, and cover the ark with a veil; Ex.40:4. and bring in the table and place all its things on it, and bring in the lamp and place its lamps on it; Ex.40:5. And thou shalt set up the golden altar of incense before the ark of the testimony, and hang the curtain at the door of the tabernacle [of meeting]; Ex.40:6. And thou shalt set up the altar of burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; Ex.40:7. And thou shalt place the laver between the tabernacle of the congregation and between the altar, and pour water into it; Exodus 40:8. And thou shalt set up the courtyard round about, and hang a curtain at the gate of the courtyard. Ex.40:9. And take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and consecrate it and all its utensils, and it will be holy; Ex.40:10. anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and sanctify the altar, and the altar will be greatly holy. Ex.40:11. and thou shalt anoint the laver and the foot thereof, and sanctify it. Ex.40:12. And bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and wash them with water, Ex.40:13. and clothe Aaron with holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may be a priest unto me. Ex.40:14. And bring his sons, and dress them in tunics, Ex.40:15. and anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may be priests to Me, and their anointing will consecrate them to an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. The previously given command is repeated (Ex. 30:25–30). Ex.40:16. And Moses did all that the Lord commanded him, and so he did. Exodus 40:17. In the first month of the second year [after their exodus from Egypt], on the first day of the month the tabernacle was erected. Exodus 40:18. And Moses pitched the tabernacle, set up its stools, set up its beams, set up its poles, and set up its pillars, Ex.40:19. He spread the cover over the tabernacle, and put the cover on top of this cover, as the Lord commanded Moses. Ex.40:20. And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and put the staves into the rings of the ark, and put the mercy seat on top of the ark; The revelation was placed in the ark, i.e. tablets, and besides them, there was nothing in it. Aaron's rod that blossomed was laid before the ark of the testimony (Num. 17:10); the pot of manna was placed before the ark (Ex. 16:34) and the book of the law was placed “at the right hand of the ark” (Deut. 31:26). In accordance with this, the author of book 3. Kings notes: “there was nothing in the ark except two tablets of stone, which Moses put there” (1 Kings 8:9, cf. 2 Chronicles 5:10). The famous testimony of Ap. Paul (Heb. 9:3–4) is based, perhaps, on Jewish tradition. Ex.40:21. and he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and hung up the veil, and shut the ark of the testimony, as the Lord commanded Moses. Ex.40:22. And he set the table in the tabernacle of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil, Ex.40:23. and he laid out a row of loaves on it before the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. Ex.40:24. And he set the lampstand in the tabernacle of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle, Ex.40:25. and he set [his] lamps before the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. Exodus 40:26. And he set up the golden altar in the tabernacle of meeting before the veil. Ex.40:27. and he burned sweet incense on it, as the Lord commanded Moses. Exodus 40:28. And he hung up the curtain at the entrance of the tabernacle; Ex.40:29. And he set up the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the tabernacle of meeting, and offered burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, as the Lord commanded Moses. Ex.40:30. And he placed the laver between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar, and filled it with water for washing, Ex.40:31. and Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet from it: Ex.40:32. when they entered into the tabernacle of meeting and came to the altar [to serve], then they washed [from it], as the Lord commanded Moses. Ex.40:33. And he set up a court around the tabernacle and the altar, and hung a curtain on the gate of the court. And so Moses finished the job. Ex.40:34. And the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle; The cloud was a symbol of the presence of the Lord (Ex. 14:19–20, 24:15–17, 33:9). Having previously overshadowed the tent, which Moses carried outside the camp after the calf service (Ex. 33:9), it now covered the tabernacle of meeting, which served as an indication of God’s favor. Ex.40:35. and Moses could not enter into the tabernacle of meeting, because a cloud overshadowed it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. The glory of the Lord had the appearance of a terrible “consuming fire” for mere mortals (Ex. 24:17), which served as an obstacle for Moses to go to the tabernacle. In addition, this required a special command from the Lord (Ex. 24:16, 18). Ex.40:36. When the cloud lifted from the tabernacle, then the children of Israel set out on their entire journey; Ex.40:37. if the cloud did not rise, then they did not set off until it rose, Ex.40:38. for the cloud of the Lord stood over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel all their journey. The cloud that overshadowed the tabernacle replaced the pillar of cloud and fire for the Jews (Ex. 13:21–22). You might be interested in:
